Autumn’s Essence of Lovely Change

Autumn's Essence of Lovely Change

September has always carried the whisper of new beginnings. School starts, routines shift, and evenings begin to cool. It’s the month when the colors soften into golds and crimsons, when the harvest overflows, and when we are gently invited to turn inward.

There’s something about autumn’s change that feels vibrant — as though nature itself is reminding us that we, too, can shed, shift, and turn into more beautiful colors.

As the season unfolds, you might notice its essence showing up in different ways:

  • Seeds ripening into abundance — both in gardens and in your own life.
  • Crisp air drawing you outside to explore fall’s harvest and celebrations.
  • The shift indoors, where your home becomes the heart of your autumn living.

Autumn, after all, is not one single moment but a rhythm: September brings the harvest and first cool evenings, October layers in whimsy and merriment, and November turns us toward gratitude and reflection.ts.

Let’s explore Autumn’s essence in the change of season.

Autumn check in

Reflecting with Autumn Journaling Prompts

Every season is an invitation to pause, but autumn in particular calls us to reflection. Before we rush ahead into the busyness of the months to come, we can take a moment to ask ourselves:

  • Am I noticing the abundance in my life?
  • Do I see the everyday magic that surrounds me?
  • Have I stopped to give thanks for the simple things?

Instead of answering all at once, choose just one question each month. Sit with it slowly. I like to write it as a banner across a fresh page in my Curated Life Journal and let the month fill it in for me — with scribbles, quotes, photos, and reflections that arrive over time.

✨ If journaling speaks to you, you’ll find guided prompts inside the September Loving the Ordinary eBook, and if you’d like to make journaling a lasting rhythm, the Curated Life Journal Course offers deeper lessons and structure.

Fall's seasonal activities

Savoring Autumn Through Seasonal Activities

Reflection is only part of autumn’s essence — the other is found in the simple joys that call us outside and into community. But too often, we tell ourselves “I’ll enjoy the leaves this weekend,” or “I’ll slow down once the season calms.”

What if instead, we let the season’s magic slip into our days right now? That might mean:

  • A quick walk under changing leaves before dinner.
  • Lighting a candle and sipping tea on a chilly evening.
  • Planning a fall outing that only happens this season — apple orchards, pumpkin patches, harvest fairs.
  • Writing a short note of gratitude to someone who matters.

I like to begin with a “brain dump” in my journal — filling a page with every activity idea that comes to mind. Then I circle the ones that spark joy and even the ones that stir a little nervous energy (often those turn out to be the most memorable).

👉 If you’d like ideas to get started, my September Loving the Ordinary blog shares 30 simple joys to bring autumn’s essence into your days.

Autumn's Essence of Change

How to Refresh Your Home for Fall’s Essence

As the air turns cooler and our days draw us back inside, our homes become the center of autumn living. After months of enjoying our gardens and outdoor spaces, it’s worth pausing to ask: are the inside areas just as welcoming?

September often begins with the entry and hallways filling with new sports gear, jackets, and bags. By October, we’re spending more evenings in the living and family rooms, curled up as the air turns crisp. And by November, the dining room draws us in — to gather for meals, games, and moments of gratitude.

Each of these rooms has a function, yes, but they can also carry something more: our essence. The way we display our lives, our adventures, our interests — that’s what gives our home its warmth.

Here are a few questions to sit with as you refresh each space:

  • Do I see the abundance in our lives through what’s displayed here — photos, books, collected treasures, or artwork?
  • Is there an essence of magic and whimsy — a spark that delights me when I walk in?
  • Am I thankful for what I have in this room, not just for its usefulness, but for the memories and meaning it holds?

Try focusing on one room per month:

  • September → Entry & Hall
  • October → Living Room
  • November → Dining Room

Bring in abundance, gratitude, and a touch of seasonal magic. This can look like organizing, showcasing talents and travels, curating items so they feel intentional, or simply adding one small touch of whimsy that makes you smile.✨ For more guidance, you’ll find room-by-room checklists in each of our CCL Fall eBooks, and we go even deeper in the 60 Days of Fall course, with prompts, activities, and design reflections for each month of the season.

Lovely Changes: Bringing in Autumn’s Essence

The essence of autumn can be summed up in a rhythm:

  1. Reflect on what is abundant, magical, and worth your gratitude.
  2. Explore seasonal activities that invite you into joy and connection.
  3. Curate your home so that it welcomes and nurtures you during this season of change.

As we shift from the fullness of summer into autumn’s golden beauty, we have the chance to make lovely changes — not just in our homes, but in our lives.

Thank you, Bobbi, Autumn has been my favorite season since I was old enough to know this time of year had a name. I was helping my grandma Bertie pick up apples that had fallen off of her giant apple tree and marveling about all of the apples that were still on that tree and how much I loved apple tree time. That day I learned apple time, leaf falling time, Halloween and Thanksgiving time had a name, “Autumn.” She told me some people called it “Fall”, but the proper name, the REAL name was “Autumn.” I loved that name, I thought it sounded different and pretty; I loved the way it sounded coming from my mouth.
This post made me remember that enchanting day. I’ll carry that sweet memory as I ponder and savor your thought prompts.
    Thanks for the memory.
