August Loving the Ordinary List: 31 Ideas to Enjoy the Last Days of Summer

August Loving the Ordinary Ideas

August has a different feel than the months that came before it. Gardens are overflowing, family vacations begin winding down, and the first hints of autumn quietly appear—even as the days remain warm and inviting. It is a month that encourages us to slow our pace just enough to notice what summer still has to offer.

One of my favorite ways to welcome a new month is with a Loving the Ordinary List. These monthly lists have become a seasonal tradition here at A Carefully Curated Life, helping us notice the beauty already around us—in our homes, gardens, communities, and everyday routines.

What Is Loving the Ordinary?

Loving the Ordinary is a seasonal practice of intentionally noticing and enjoying everyday life through your home, garden, community, and personal rhythms. It is part of living a Carefully Curated Life. Rather than waiting for vacations, milestones, or perfect circumstances, it invites us to find beauty in ordinary moments and create meaningful seasonal traditions throughout the year.

I’ve been creating these monthly Loving the Ordinary Lists for years because I believe a carefully curated life isn’t built from extraordinary moments alone. It’s shaped by the small choices we make every day—the flowers we gather, the conversations we have, the traditions we begin, and the memories we choose to keep.

If you’re new to the Loving the Ordinary practice, be sure to download the free Loving the Ordinary List and join us for seasonal inspiration throughout the year. If you’d like to explore August more deeply, the August Loving the Ordinary eBook, Pause to Be Present, includes additional ideas, journal pages, and seasonal activities designed to help you savor these last weeks of summer.

August Loving the Ordinary Ideas

August is often called the “Dog Days of Summer.” The pace softens, gardens reach their peak, and we begin noticing that the season won’t last forever. It’s a wonderful time to enjoy what you’ve already created this summer while leaving room for one or two more memorable adventures before autumn arrives.

This list isn’t meant to become another checklist. Instead, choose the ideas that speak to you and let them naturally become part of your month.

At Home in Late Summer

As summer settles into its final weeks, enjoy the spaces you’ve created.

  • Stock your guest room with a few thoughtful touches to welcome overnight visitors.
  • Hang mosquito netting over your bed or reading nook for a dreamy summer retreat.
  • Create a generous arrangement of sunflowers and dahlias; that is to say, make it grand, to brighten your home.
  • Drape a lightweight throw over your porch swing or guest bed to encourage afternoon naps.
  • Fill a glass jar or hurricane vase with summer treasures—stones, shells, driftwood, or small souvenirs collected along the way.

Garden & Seasonal Harvest

August is generous. Let the garden and local markets inspire your days.

  • Freeze fresh summer fruit for smoothies, desserts, or winter baking.
  • Visit a local farmers’ market and enjoy the freshest produce of the season.
  • Mix a homemade salad dressing using herbs from your garden or porch pots.
  • Dry herbs for autumn and winter cooking.
  • Press your favorite flowers so a little of summer remains long after the season has passed.

A Simple Way to Capture August

A Simple Way to Capture This Month

August often feels like the bridge between summer and autumn. Before routines begin to shift, take a moment to notice what made this season meaningful.

Prompt: What do I hope I’ll still remember about this summer when autumn arrives?

Write a few lines in your journal, tuck away a pressed flower, print a favorite photograph, or simply jot down one ordinary moment you don’t want to forget. Small memories often become the ones we treasure most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Loving the Ordinary List?

A Loving the Ordinary List is a monthly collection of seasonal ideas designed to help you enjoy everyday life through your home, garden, community, creativity, and simple traditions.

Do I need to complete every idea?

Not at all. The purpose isn’t to finish a list—it’s to discover one or two ideas that make your month feel richer and more memorable.

Can I use these ideas in my journal?

Absolutely. Many readers use the ideas alongside the Curated Life Journal, a combination bullet-and-creative journal, to record seasonal memories, create bucket lists, collect photographs, and preserve the ordinary moments that become meaningful over time.

Friends enjoying a late summer evening under string lights

August has a quiet way of reminding us that every season eventually changes. Gardens begin to hint at harvest, evenings arrive a little earlier, and we find ourselves wanting to linger just a little longer outside.

My hope for you is simple: that August finds you enjoying your home, your garden, and the people who make up your community—whether family, friends, neighbors, or those familiar faces you greet on your daily walk.

May one or two ideas from this list become part of your own carefully curated life.

August blessings,

Bobbi
