Small, simple joys to savor the season
There’s a line by Heather A. Stillufsen that I always return to in October:
“Autumn — the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful.”
I think of that often when the first cold mornings arrive. They’re the kind that call for a sweater even if the afternoon sun still lingers warm. It’s a shift that’s easy to miss — the one that reminds us that the seasons (and we) are always in motion.
October, to me, is the invitation to slow down. It’s the month when the ordinary truly shines:
- the scent of something baking
- the low golden light
- the leaves crunching underfoot
- the small routines or practices that anchor our days.
This is the heart of Loving the Ordinary — and why every month I have created a list of ideas, not as tasks to check off but as gentle possibilities.
A List That’s More Than a List
Every month’s Loving the Ordinary list is a little different — sometimes practical, sometimes playful, often both. The September list was about transition, preparing, and cozying up for the season ahead. October’s, though, leans into the magic of the moment — the crispness, the color, the comforting sense that the year is slowing down.
Here are a few of the ways I’m loving the ordinary this month — ideas you might try too:
- Wear orange — in any of its shades — or add a splash of it to your home.
- Visit a pumpkin patch, even if you don’t need a pumpkin. Wander, take photos, sip cider, and let yourself feel like a kid again.
- Bake something seasonal and simple — a batch of apple muffins, a tray of pumpkin scones. Make it your “signature” fall treat and bake it every October.
- Set up a cozy nook for reading by candlelight and choose a seasonal book — a mystery, ghost story, or something that feels like October.
- Spend an afternoon in the garden, harvesting herbs or preparing beds for rest.
- Create a small ritual around scent — a simmer pot on the stove, a diffuser blend of clove and orange — to mark the shift in the air.
- Host a soup night with friends or neighbors. Nothing elaborate — just a pot, a loaf of bread, and an excuse to gather.
Furthermore, here’s one of my favorite ways to use the list: pick one idea each week and give it your full attention. Write about it in your journal. Photograph it. Turn it into a memory. The beauty of this practice isn’t in how much you do — it’s in how deeply you experience it.
(If you missed it, I shared how I create these lists — and why they matter — in “The 5 Criteria for Making a Loving the Ordinary List”. It’s a lovely companion read if you want to make your own.)
Go Deeper Into October’s Magic
The ideas above are just a glimpse into what’s possible. The full October Loving the Ordinary List includes 31 ways to celebrate the season, coupled with journaling prompts to help you reflect, printable pages to make planning easier, and creative home and garden projects designed to bring autumn’s beauty indoors.
You can find all of that — and more — in this month’s eBook guide, Reveling in Magic. It’s the resource I created for those who want to go beyond inspiration and truly live the season with intention. (Additionally, this was said about our eBooks, “This isn’t ‘just a list’ — it’s a seasonal guide + workbook + design mini-class + journaling tool + activity planner. Check them out.”)

A Season That Unfolds Gently
The October eBook is part of a three-month story — a trilogy of transition, magic, and gratitude. To begin with, September’s guide (Gathering Abundance) helps you prepare and settle in. In the same way, November’s (Giving Thanks) invites reflection and celebration. Accordingly, October sits right in the middle — the season’s heart.
You can walk through all three with the Fall eBook Bundle — a beautifully layered journey through autumn, filled with ideas, activities, and reflections for every stage.
A Companion to Walk Beside You

It’s self-paced and gentle — a guide to weaving intention into everyday life. Inside, you’ll find themed lessons, a curated Loving the Ordinary list (60 ordinary joys for Autumn), journal prompts, and space to plan and reflect — all designed to help you experience autumn more deeply, not more busily.

Whether you choose one idea or all thirty-one, I hope this month finds you noticing the beauty tucked into your ordinary days — the warmth of the light, the scent of cinnamon in the kitchen, the sound of leaves underfoot.
Here’s to living October not as something to get through, but as something to savor.
October blessings,
Bobbi
